Fountains share the frame with the library's north side in this view from about 1905, a detail that sets it apart from the building-only pictures of the period. The library was one of the many public libraries that Andrew Carnegie, the Pittsburgh-born steel magnate, financed across the country to give ordinary readers free access to books. The image is a large glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes around 1900, and the negative now sits in the Library of Congress collection.
