Book stacks and reading tables fill the interior of a library in North Easton, a village in Easton, Massachusetts, in a view dating to about 1905. The village's best-known library is the Ames Free Library, a rough granite building designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and built in the late 1870s with funds from the Ames family, a prominent local industrial family. Richardson's Romanesque style made the building a landmark, and interiors like this one show how public libraries of the period arranged open shelving and long tables for readers.
