Tall shelves packed with bound volumes fill this view of the book stacks inside the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Library's collection was rebuilt in 1815, when Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to Congress after British forces burned the original holdings during the War of 1812. As the collection grew, the stacks were expanded to hold ever more volumes, and the narrow aisles shown here reflect that need for storage. The record gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the scene likely reflects the Library's growth in the late 19th or early 20th century.
