This wood engraving shows the interior of G. G. Evans's gift book establishment at 439 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, a shop from the 1850s that belonged to a booming retail trade. Gift book houses sold volumes together with a small item such as jewelry or a trinket, and buyers often learned what they had won only after paying. The view appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* at the end of 1859, so it offers a rare look at how these crowded, merchandise-filled rooms were arranged for customers.
