The Great Gift Book Establishment of G. G. Evans stood at 439 Chestnut Street, on one of Philadelphia's main commercial thoroughfares, and this wood engraving records the shop's exterior from the street. Gift books, illustrated volumes of verse and prose bound for sale mainly around the winter holidays, were a significant part of the mid-nineteenth-century book trade, and a dedicated shop for them reflected that market. The view appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on December 31, 1859, one of the weekly papers that brought urban scenes like this to readers well beyond the city.
