The first thing to notice here is the slogan itself: "Hey Fellows!" addressed directly to soldiers, asking for donations so the book they wanted would reach them. This color lithograph was produced for the United War Work Campaign, a coordinated effort of several civilian relief organizations that raised money in late 1918 to support American troops in France and at home. The American Library Association took part by funding books and reading material for military camps. John Sheridan designed the poster under the Committee on Public Information's Division of Pictorial Publicity, the federal office that produced much of the country's wartime art. It was issued for the week of November 11, 1918, when the armistice was signed.
