Rather than a battlefield or a portrait, this lithograph is the decorative title page for the first volume of Alexander Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*, published in Washington in 1865 and 1866. The design was drawn by Alfred R. Waud, a well-known illustrator who recorded much of the conflict for newspapers and magazines, and it was reproduced as a lithograph. Gardner's book gathered photographs he and his assistants made at camps, battlefields and other sites, and its title page signaled the commemorative purpose of the collection just months after the war ended.
