Alexander Gardner's two-volume *Photographic Sketchbook of the War* appeared in 1866, a year after the fighting ended, and collected 100 photographs of battlefields, camps and fortifications. Gardner had worked for Mathew Brady before setting up on his own, and many of the plates were made by his assistants, including Timothy O'Sullivan. Its albumen prints, each mounted on a page with a caption, were among the first attempts to present war photography as a published record, and its views of Gettysburg remain some of the most studied pictures of the conflict.
