The packing room at G. G. Evans's gift book establishment on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia is the focus of this wood engraving, which appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on December 31, 1859. Illustrated gift books were a major part of the holiday trade in the mid-1800s, sold as Christmas and New Year presents, so an engraving of the back-room work of such a shop timed to the year's end captures the rush of that season. Wood engravings like this one were the main way newspapers showed readers the inner workings of businesses and the look of city life before photographs could be reproduced in print.
