Here a pipe and a book share the frame, pairing tobacco with reading in a quiet domestic scene that John Barclay chose to etch. The print is signed in pencil, which marks it as a signed impression, and its crown watermark identifies the paper. The Library of Congress acquired it through the Pennell Fund, named for the American printmaker Joseph Pennell. No date is recorded, so the period is best judged from the style and the long tradition of etched genre scenes.
