A photograph of an architectural drawing showing the interior stacks of the Library of Congress is the subject here, with shelving rows that suggest a planned book-storage space. The catalog card links the image to the library's construction and to April 1890, when Congress was building a new home for a collection that had long outgrown its rooms in the Capitol. Planners of that building gave particular attention to stack design, favoring iron framing and fireproof shelving to hold large numbers of volumes safely. Because the caption information is old and unverified, the exact subject and date should be read with some caution.
