Marbled paper, the swirled, feathered decoration made by floating inks on a bath of size and combing them into patterns, was once a common covering for the boards of hand-bound books. This example carries a Library of Congress label, a small mark that shows it passed through the institution's collections and was catalogued there. Marbling was practiced across Europe and the Middle East for centuries, and by the 19th century it was prized by bookbinders for its handmade variety, since no two sheets came out exactly alike. Look closely at the veins and combed lines to see the individual movement of the ink.
