Marbled paper is a decorative technique in which pigments float on a bath of thickened liquid and are then lifted onto paper, producing swirling, feathered patterns. This example, with its red, cream and blue combed design, belongs to a group of papers made to line book covers, endpapers and bindings. Combing, where a tool drags through the wet surface to form repeating arcs, was one of the most popular patterns in European and American bookbinding from the 1600s onward. Pieces like this were often hand-made in small workshops, so each sheet differs slightly in color and movement.
