Mark Twain's name anchors this color lithograph, which Harper & Brothers of New York issued to advertise his essay "Stirring Times in Austria" in the magazine's March issue. The piece covered the Austrian parliament in Vienna, where deputies had been shouting and brawling over language rights for the empire's many nationalities. The fight had sharpened after the 1897 language ordinances, and Twain, who had a gift for turning political disorder into comedy, made it the subject of his satire. As a publisher's poster, the print was meant to draw attention on newsstands and in shop windows, so its bold color and headline do much of the work.
