The closed book resting on the lap of the seated figure, with its visible clasps, is what sets this view apart from other images of the sculpture. Robert Ingersoll Aitken's *Past* sits on the north side of the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C. The building, designed by John Russell Pope, was completed in the mid-1930s to house the nation's founding documents, and its allegorical sculpture was meant to reflect that purpose. Aitken, a sculptor known for his classical figures, depicted history as a figure that holds the record of what came before, a fitting image for an institution devoted to preserving documents.
