Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the subject here, a civic building funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who paid for hundreds of public libraries across the country. The Pittsburgh library opened in 1895 in the Oakland district, alongside the Carnegie Institute, and it reflected the era's belief that free public reading rooms could widen access to learning. This view was made as a glass plate negative around 1901 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landmarks.
