Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo, New York, was the site of the city's central public library, and this view shows the building set within the open plaza that made the square a civic center. The photograph is one of many 8-by-10-inch glass negatives that the Detroit Publishing Company made around the turn of the twentieth century, when the firm documented American cities, landmarks and street life for travel books and postcards. Civic buildings like this library were often photographed to show the growing public institutions of industrial cities, and the wide, tree-lined square gives a sense of how such spaces were meant to be seen and used.
