The title places this glass negative on the opening day of the New York Public Library, whose Beaux-Arts central building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street opened to the public in May 1911. Its marble facade and flanking stone lions made it one of the largest public building projects of its era, meant to put a vast research collection within reach of ordinary readers. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers. The title comes from caption information that has not been independently verified.
