The New York Public Library's Fifth Avenue building, opened to the public on May 23, 1911, is the subject here, shown on the day its doors first swung open to readers. The building's Beaux-Arts design, with its broad marble steps and monumental facade, was meant to signal that free access to books belonged in a grand civic setting. Its two lion sculptures, Patience and Fortitude, were added to the front steps in the same era and have since become city landmarks. Worth noticing is the crowd and the sense of ceremony, which capture how much public attention the library drew at its debut.
