Before the New York Public Library's main building opened on Fifth Avenue, the site at 42nd Street was the former Croton Reservoir, and this c1908 view records the surrounding streets as the building was going up. The Detroit Publishing Company made the image on a glass dry plate negative, part of a large effort to document American cities at the turn of the century. The library was designed by Carrère and Hastings in the Beaux-Arts style and opened in 1911. Its stone lions, Patience and Fortitude, were installed a few years after the building opened.
