The building at the center of this picture is the New York Public Library's main branch on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, whose Beaux-Arts marble facade opened to the public in 1911. The Library of Congress record dates the print to about 1914 and credits the New York photographer Irving Underhill, whose copyright notice indicates the image was registered for publication. The subject tags also place the scene within the broader life of the city in the 1910s, when the library stood as a symbol of public access to learning in New York. The record does not describe the vantage point or the street activity around the building.
