The American Library Association's War Service was a wartime effort to put books in the hands of American soldiers, and this poster makes its appeal in plain terms, asking the public to support the work. During the First World War, the ALA ran libraries in military camps and in France, and it collected reading material for troops who had little access to books. Posters like this one were part of a broader campaign of civilian war work in 1917 and 1918, when home-front groups raised money and donated volumes to keep servicemen reading. The print is a halftone reproduction, a common method for mass-produced posters of the period.
