Set across Independence Avenue from the Jefferson Building, this Annex was built to relieve the Library of Congress's crowded stacks, which had outgrown their original home by the late 1920s. Construction stretched through the Depression, and the building opened in 1939 to hold a growing collection of books, manuscripts, and periodicals. Its restrained limestone classicism contrasts with the ornate Jefferson Building, a visible sign of how much the library's holdings had expanded in four decades.
