Recorded as the first brick building in Boston, the Old Corner Bookstore stands at Washington and School streets in this c1900 view from the Detroit Publishing Company. Built in the early 1700s, it housed bookshops from 1828, and under the publisher Ticknor and Fields it became a meeting place for Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The cracked glass negative, repaired with tape, shows the wear that many early plates endured.
