Storefront life on a Harlem street gives this 1962 exterior its subject: a bookstore serving the neighborhood's African American community. Henri Cartier-Bresson, the French photographer and a co-founder of the Magnum agency, made the picture during his travels in the United States. In the early 1960s Harlem was a center of Black publishing, bookselling, and political debate, and shops like this one often served as meeting places as much as places to buy. The print offers a useful record of how such businesses looked from the sidewalk.
