Issued as the third number of volume XVIII in April 1899, this color poster promoted *The Book Buyer*, a monthly guide to new titles from Charles Scribner's Sons, whose Fifth Avenue address in New York appears in the imprint. Maxfield Parrish, then a young illustrator who would later become one of the best-known American painters of his era, designed it for the firm. Posters like this were meant for bookshops and trade displays, so the design had to catch the eye quickly. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
