A reading figure set against a nude study makes this Maxfield Parrish lithograph stand out among 1890s magazine posters, and it was made to promote the August fiction number of Scribner's. Parrish was then a young illustrator whose crisp, decorative line suited the color poster trade flourishing at the time. Scribner's was one of the leading literary monthlies of its day, and posters like this one drew readers to its new stories. The printer and place of publication are not recorded, but the work is an early example of the idealized figures that later defined Parrish's career.
