Harper & Brothers of New York used this 1893 color lithograph to promote its Christmas number, and the poster's focus is on women's fashion of the day. The initials E.P. in the design are generally credited to Edward Penfield, who designed many of Harper's magazine posters in the 1890s. His flat areas of bold color and simplified figures shaped American magazine advertising of the period, and posters like this one were displayed in shop windows and on city streets to draw holiday buyers to newsstands.
