The Century Company's 1894 Christmas number, promoted by this color poster, carried a title that promised "the new life of Napoleon," so the feature was clearly meant to draw readers with a famous subject. Louis John Rhead, an English-born designer working in New York, made the poster, and he became one of the more prominent American poster artists of the 1890s. Such posters were a common and relatively inexpensive way for publishers to catch the eye of buyers at newsstands, and the bold lettering and flat areas of color reflect the poster style that had spread from Paris and London to American cities during that decade.
