This color poster, made for the August midsummer holiday number of *The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine*, earned second prize in the magazine's poster contest. The young Maxfield Parrish, born in 1870, designed it around 1897, early in a career that later made him one of the most recognized illustrators in the United States. The contest belonged to the wave of American poster art of the 1890s, when magazines and publishers commissioned bold, simplified images to draw attention on newsstands and in shop windows. The record's date and some catalog details are unverified, so the exact year is best read as approximate.
