Edward Penfield's color lithograph for the August 1892 issue of Harper's Magazine is one of the earlier magazine posters in this group, and it shows how quickly advertising art was changing in the 1890s. Penfield, a young illustrator who would later become one of the most recognized American poster designers, used flat areas of color and bold lettering to catch the eye of passersby on city streets. The record's caption notes are rough, so details about its exact printing and distribution are uncertain, but the piece is a clear example of the period's turn toward graphic poster design as a way to sell periodicals.
