Carriages and women are the subjects here, set in a flat, bold palette that sets this Harper's poster apart from the magazine's other advertisements. Edward Penfield, one of the leading American poster designers of the 1890s, made this color poster to promote a November issue of Harper's. His pictograph, a small stylized signature mark, appears on the design. The record gives the date only as the 189- decade, so the exact year of printing is uncertain.
