Edward Penfield's 1897 poster for Harper's magazine is a bold color design, printed in New York by Harper & Brothers, and it stands out for the way it turns a periodical's name into a graphic statement. Penfield, an American illustrator who worked for a number of magazines, was one of the leading figures in the poster craze that swept the United States and Europe in the 1890s, when advertising art was newly fashionable among collectors. His posters for magazines were built around flat areas of color and strong silhouettes, a style that owed much to French and British poster design. The record notes that its date and promotional details come from an older caption card and are unverified, so the poster's exact use is worth reading with that in mind.
