Edward Penfield's color poster for the January 1894 issue of *Harper's* was produced for Harper & Brothers of New York, publisher of *Harper's Magazine*. Penfield designed a long run of monthly posters for the magazine in the 1890s, when poster art was enjoying a brief boom in the United States after European work by artists such as Jules Chéret and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. His bold flat shapes and limited palettes made these advertisements striking on city hoardings and in shop windows. The record's details come from an older caption card and have not been fully verified, but the poster remains a good example of how commercial design and magazine publishing overlapped at the century's end.
