*Harper's January* is a color lithograph promoting the January issue of the magazine published by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1898. Its subject is women's clothing and dress of the 1890s, a common theme in the decade's periodical art. American publishers of this period relied on bold flat color and simple lettering to catch the eye at newsstands and in shop windows. The artist signed the sheet with a pictograph, a small symbol in place of a full name, so the maker is identified by that mark rather than a written signature.
