Edward Penfield's 1897 poster for the August issue of Harper's Magazine stands out for its bold flat color and its clean, graphic handling of a woman's figure, a style that helped define American magazine advertising in the 1890s. Penfield, who worked from New York for Harper & Brothers, produced a series of these posters to promote the monthly, and they were pasted on hoardings and billboards where passersby could read them at a glance. The record notes that the caption card is unverified, so the exact details of its distribution are uncertain, but the poster's simple shapes and strong color show why Penfield's work was so influential in graphic design of the period.
