Penfield's poster for the August 1895 issue of *Harper's* stands out for its summer theme, which the old caption card tags with bathing suits, though that detail is unverified. Edward Penfield was one of the most sought-after American poster designers of the 1890s, and his bold color lithographs for Harper's publications helped define the magazine's look on newsstands and billboards. Like other posters of the period, the design relies on flat areas of strong color and simple shapes, an approach drawn from French and British poster art, to catch the eye of passersby. Notice how little text it needs, since the magazine's name and the month do most of the work.
