Printed in color, this lithograph advertises the August holiday number of *St. Nicholas*, a children's magazine edited by Mary Mapes Dodge and published by The Century Co. of New York. Dodge led the magazine from 1873 until her death in 1905, and it became one of the most widely read periodicals for young people in the United States. The design is credited to Louis Rhead, an English-born illustrator who produced many color posters in the 1890s, when American poster art was flourishing. Some details of the record come from an older caption card and have not been fully verified.
