Few advertisements of the 1890s carry a signature that reads backward, but this chromolithograph is marked "Mosnar Yendis," the name of Sidney Ransom reversed. Ransom was connected with *The Poster*, an illustrated monthly that promoted the new art of the poster during the decade's boom in colorful advertising. Printed by David Allen & Sons, a firm known for its lithographic work, the sheet combines the subjects of relations between the sexes and masks. That pairing was common in fin-de-siècle design, where theatrical disguise often stood in for romantic and social tension.
