Six figures, from Stuart Davis and David Alfaro Siqueiros to Louis Lozowick, Ralph Pearson, Max Spivak and Julia Homburger, sit side by side in this pencil sheet from 1936. The American Artists Congress, which met in New York that year, brought together painters, sculptors and printmakers who opposed fascism abroad and sought better economic footing for working artists at home. Davis and Siqueiros were both prominent in left-leaning art circles of the period, so their presence marks the gathering as much as the individual likenesses do. The drawing is signed in pencil, and the reverse bears printed type, a hint that the sheet was connected to the congress's printed materials.
