Joseph Keppler's two-page color lithograph, published in *Puck* on August 10, 1881, shows the artist asleep while his favorite caricature subjects take over his work to correct his conceptions. The record names Samuel J. Tilden and Ulysses S. Grant among those subjects, two political figures whose names were frequently in the news of the period. Keppler, a Vienna-born cartoonist who co-founded *Puck* in 1876, made the satirical magazine a leading showcase for this kind of commentary. The lithograph was printed in New York by Mayer, Merkel & Ottmann and ran across pages 388 and 389 of that issue.
