Measuring just 11 by 9 centimeters, this pen and brown ink sketch shows James McNeill Whistler studying his own face, a far smaller and quicker thing than the paintings it prepared. The catalog dates it between 1898 and 1900, and Joseph Pennell, Whistler's friend and biographer, linked it first to a full-length self-portrait shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900 and later to the painting *Brown and Gold*. On the back is a fragment of a letter in which Whistler thanks a newspaper, apparently the *Daily Mail*, and the drawing is signed with his butterfly monogram, a mark he used throughout his career.
