A profile self-portrait of the painter Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), shown from the waist up and turned to the right, with a pencil or brush in hand, this ink and wash drawing is attributed to him and dated ca. 1783. Stuart was working in London at the time, and the drawing shows him looking inward as an artist rather than as a sitter for a commission. An inscription on the original framing material says he drew it himself in 1783 and gave it to the Philadelphia painter Thomas Sully around 1817. It later passed to a R. Lambdin by 1857, a chain of ownership that makes it a useful record of how Stuart's work circulated among American artists.
