The most striking thing about this watercolour is its lamplight. Warm glows pick out the furniture, the seated figures and the polished surfaces of a Victorian drawing room, so the scene reads as an evening gathering rather than a daytime interior. Drawing rooms of the period were the main social space of a middle-class or upper-class house, used for receiving guests, conversation, music and reading. Interiors like this were a favorite subject for watercolourists of the era, who used the medium's transparent washes to capture soft light on fabric and wood. Looking closely at the arrangement of the company shows how the room was meant to be used.
