Rather than a scene, this lithograph presents the national coat of arms in full color, with the shield, eagle, and motto rendered as a heraldic emblem. Joseph E. Baker drew the design, and the Boston firm of Bufford's, a busy commercial lithography house on Washington Street, issued it around 1864, in the middle of the Civil War. Patriotic emblems like this were popular in wartime, when many households and public buildings displayed symbols of the Union. The print's listing as an allegorical work reflects that tradition of using emblems to express national unity.
