Rain interrupts a picnic in this ink and watercolor drawing, a scene chosen for its gentle humor. The sheet was published in September 1927 as part of a humorous series that found comedy in ordinary weekend pleasures. Outings to parks and countryside were a popular pastime in the 1920s, as more families owned automobiles, so readers would have recognized the familiar disappointment of a planned afternoon washed out. Its loose pen line and light washes of color are typical of the quick illustration style of the period.
