Here a woman stands barefoot inside a wooden barrel, pressing grapes with her feet, a labor that has shaped winemaking for thousands of years. The watercolor captures the rhythm of the work: the bending knees, the spill of fruit at her ankles, the loose sleeves and skirt of rural dress. Treading was usually done by hand-picked crews during the autumn harvest, and it gave the artist a way to show both physical effort and the seasonal abundance that defined farm life. Watercolor suited such scenes because its soft, translucent washes suggest the juice and light of late summer.
