This 1936 silkscreen poster announces free art classes for both children and adults, run under the Federal Art Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Projects Administration). The Federal Art Project, created in 1935, put unemployed artists to work during the Great Depression, and its New York poster unit helped develop the silkscreen process, which allowed inexpensive, bold, multicolor posters. Posters like this one carried public information about community programs, and this example shows how the WPA used classes and public art instruction to bring art into everyday neighborhood life.
