Few posters of the period are tied so closely to a single institution as this one, which announces conferences under the banner of La Libre Esthétique, the Brussels society Octave Maus founded in 1893 to show progressive painting, sculpture and decorative arts. Printed in color as a lithograph by the Brussels firm Vve Monnom, it reflects the Belgian enthusiasm of the 1890s for graphic work that moved posters beyond plain notices. The catalogers have tagged it with the subject of reading, which fits a society that wanted its lectures and exhibitions to reach a broader public.
