Falling Spring is a waterfall in the mountains of western Virginia, and this print turns a painter's view of it into a color lithograph. Samuel Colman, a landscape painter associated with the American scenic tradition of the mid-1800s, supplied the original picture, and the Currier & Ives firm, which was based in New York, published the reproduction around 1868. Such prints gave families who could not travel to the mountains a way to bring the scenery of the rugged interior into their parlors. Look for how the cascade is framed by rock and foliage, a typical way of presenting the picturesque to the public.
